Cook St. ADU

Two-Bedroom ADU for Flexible Living

Collaboration: L&D Construction + Fury Design

2 Bed, 1 Bath, 728 SQFT of living space
992 SQFT garage
Completed 2018

This project began when the homeowners found L&D Construction while researching ADU builders online. What started as a typical client introduction quickly turned into a unique connection. The homeowners had deep family roots in Colorado's Wet Mountain Valley—an area that also happens to be where David and Sarah's families settled as part of the German Colony in the late 1800s. Discovering that shared history made for an unforgettable start to the project and laid the foundation for a strong working relationship.

The ADU was designed by Chris Chidley of Fury Design, marking the first collaboration between L&D Construction and Fury Design. It was the beginning of a successful partnership that has since led to numerous projects together.

Unlike many ADUs, which are designed as studios or one-bedroom units, this project features two bedrooms. The homeowners wanted to create a space that could serve a meaningful purpose in the community by providing affordable housing options, particularly for single mothers navigating transitional periods in life. At the same time, they recognized the flexibility an ADU could provide for their own family in the future.

That flexibility proved valuable sooner than expected. When it came time to renovate the primary residence, the homeowners temporarily moved into the ADU, allowing them to remain on the property throughout the renovation process.

This project highlights one of the greatest benefits of an ADU: adaptability. Whether providing affordable housing, accommodating changing family needs, or serving as a temporary home during a remodel, a thoughtfully designed ADU can continue to evolve alongside its owners for years to come.
